A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
